- Visit the official website of the Income Tax Department of India. The website URL is https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/register
- On the homepage, click on the ‘Register’ button. This will take you to the registration page.
- On the registration page, select the user type as “Individual” and click on the “Continue” button.
- Fill in the required details such as PAN (Permanent Account Number), surname, middle name, first name, date of birth, and residential status. Enter the captcha code displayed on the screen and click on the “Continue” button.
- On the next page, you will be asked to provide additional personal details such as contact information, address, and password for your e-Filing account. Fill in all the necessary information accurately and click on the “Continue” button.
- After clicking “Continue,” a verification page will appear. Verify all the information you have entered and click on the “Submit” button.
- Once the submission is successful, you will receive an activation link on your registered email address. Click on the activation link to activate your e-Filing account.
- After activating your account, return to the Income Tax Portal and click on the “Login” button.
- On the login page, enter your User ID (which is your PAN) and the password you set during the registration process. Also, enter the captcha code displayed on the screen and click on the “Login” button.
- Upon successful login, you will be directed to your e-Filing dashboard, where you can access various services and features provided by the Income Tax Department.
To file your Income Tax Return (ITR) online on the Income Tax Portal in India, follow these step-by-step instructions:
- Visit the official website of the Income Tax Department of India.
- On the homepage, click on the “Login” button to access your e-Filing account. Enter your User ID (which is your PAN) and the password associated with your account. Also, enter the captcha code displayed on the screen and click on the “Login” button.
- Once you log in, you will be directed to your e-Filing dashboard.
- On the dashboard, click on the “e-File” tab.
- From the drop-down menu, select “Income Tax Return.”
- Choose the assessment year for which you want to file the tax return.
- Select the appropriate ITR (Income Tax Return) form applicable to your income sources. For example, if you are a salaried individual with no business income, select ITR-1 (Sahaj) form.
- Download the pre-filled XML utility of the selected ITR form and save it on your computer.
- Open the downloaded utility using the relevant software (such as Excel or Java utility).
- Fill in the required details in the ITR form. The utility will provide pre-filled information based on your previous filings and Form 26AS. Make sure to review and update the details as necessary, including income details, deductions, and tax payable.
- Validate the data entered in the form to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Generate an XML file of the completed ITR form using the utility.
- Return to the Income Tax Portal and log in to your e-Filing account.
- On the dashboard, click on the “e-File” tab again and select “Income Tax Return.”
- Select the assessment year and the appropriate ITR form.
- Choose the “Upload XML” option and browse your computer to select the XML file you generated in Step 12.
- Upload the XML file and click on the “Submit” button.
- After successful submission, an acknowledgment (ITR-V) will be generated.
- Download the ITR-V and save it on your computer. It will also be sent to your registered email address.
- Open the downloaded ITR-V and print a copy.
- Sign the printed copy of the ITR-V in blue ink.
- Send the signed ITR-V to the Centralized Processing Center (CPC) within 120 days of e-Filing. The address will be mentioned in the ITR-V document.
