The Singapore Mathematics Methodology transforms the mindsets of students

The Singapore math method is part of the Educative technology which has marked a change in the way mathematics was taught in many classrooms worldwide. It is the easiest way for the student to be able to learn and understand mathematics to develop their skills correctly. What is Singapore math?

What is known as Singapore math in most other countries is, to Singapore, simply math. In 1982, the Singapore Ministry of Education published the first mathematics syllabus for primary school. For almost 20 years, this program was exclusively in Singapore classrooms, but in recent years it has regained great popularity in other countries because it has received recognition in the PISA and TIMSS tests.

When Jeffrey and Dawn Thomas moved to the United States from Singapore in 1998, they found their daughter’s American public school math program lacking. They began supplementing their schoolwork with the Singapore math method and wondered if the program could be as effective for other schools in the United States as it is for homeschooling families.

The pair incorporated under the name of Singapore Math Inc. and began selling the original primary math program in their textbooks. Subsequently, it has been widely adapted in various ways in different parts of the world such as Educative technology which is distinguished by allowing effective teaching because it is a teaching methodology that has been implemented in response to the need to improve student learning of mathematics.

  • Textbooks are sequential, building on previously learned concepts and skills, offering the opportunity to accelerate learning without the need for additional work.

CPA Approach

The enactive, iconic, symbolic (CPA) approach develops a deep understanding of mathematics through the construction of existing knowledge. This highly active framework introduces concepts in a tangible way and progresses to increasing levels of abstraction. In the iconic phase, students interact with physical objects to model problems.

In the symbolic phase, they make a mental connection between the objects they have just manipulated and the visual representations of those objects. For example, real oranges (or counters that stand in for oranges) are now represented as drawings of oranges. In the abstract phase, students use symbolic models of problems using numbers and mathematical symbols.
