The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its fifth list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections; actor Kangana Ranaut will be contesting from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi on a BJP ticket. Kangana, who hails from the state, and was born in Bhambla, has come a long way since making her film debut in the 2006 thriller Gangster, for which she was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Kangana Ranaut has opened up about ‘running away from home’ when she was 15, and even becoming a ‘drug addict’. After moving to Mumbai in her teenage, Kangana, now 37, made her acting debut in 2006 with a leading role in Gangster: A Love Story, co-starring Emraan Hashmi. Since then she has been praised her films such as Fashion (2008), Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010), Tanu Weds Manu (2011), among others. Kangana garnered critical acclaim for starring in the coming-of-age film Queen (2014), for which she also co-wrote the dialogues.

Kangana Ranaut predominantly works in Hindi films, and has done a few Tamil films such as Thalaivii (2021) and Chandramukhi 2 (2023). She has won four National Film Awards, five Filmfare Awards, three International Indian Film Academy Awards, and one award each from the Screen, Zee Cine, SIIMA, and Producers Guild award ceremonies. In 2021, Kangana dedicated a sweet post thanking her parents after accepting her fourth National Film Award; she received the Best Actress award for her films Panga and Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi.

In 2021, Kangana Ranaut received her Padma Shri award from then-President Ram Nath Kovind during the Padma Awards ceremony for 2020 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah also attended. Sharing a photo of herself from the event, Kangana wrote on Instagram at the time, “Long ago when I started my career a question bothered me. I asked myself some want money, some want fans, some seek fame and some just want attention. What do I want? Deep down I always knew as a girl child I wanted to earn respect and that is my treasure.
