Lok Sabha election 2024: Three-time MLA Kalyan Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress is gung-ho about beating his former son-in-law Kabir Shankar Bose who is contesting on a BJP ticket. The latter, meanwhile, is prepared to give his former father-in-law a tough fight

There is no dearth of family drama in this year’s Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. After former husband-wife Saumitra Khan (BJP) and Sujata Mondal (TMC) were pitted against each other in the Bishnupur, it’s a former son-in-law facing off against his erstwhile father-in-law in Srerampur.

Three-time MLA Kalyan Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress is gung-ho about beating his former son-in-law Kabir Shankar Bose who is contesting on a BJP ticket. “I have already done a hat-trick. This time, it will be a boundary,” Banerjee said, resorting to cricket references.

Banerjee had courted controversy in December last year when he mimicked Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar in the Parliament complex. He had also called for striking down “all political orders” delivered by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay in the SSC recruitment scam cases, alleging these were motivated by politics. The TMC leader had made the demand when Gangopadhyay announced his intention to quit the judiciary to take the political plunge. The former judge eventually joined the BJP and will contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Kabir Shankar Bose, a Supreme Court lawyer, has been active in the BJP since 2019. He had contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, but was defeated. Bose was married to Banerjee’s daughter but the couple divorced in 2017. Hitting back at Banerjee, Bose said he is ready for a tough fight.

“The battle is totally political. There is nothing personal at all. Everybody has a past. We in the BJP do not believe in personal attacks. It is Kalyan Banerjee’s behaviour that he ridiculed the Honourable Vice President and a High Court judge. That is not my culture. Moreover, his behaviour is very bad with supporters too. The people will give him an answer,” Bose said while speaking to News18.

Srerampur will vote in the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 20, Monday. The counting of votes will be held on June 4.
